How COVID has Changed Commercial Cleaning

Franchise Bible Coach Radio Podcast interviews Adam Povlitz, CEO & President of Anago Cleaning Systems

Anago Cleaning Systems CEO & President Adam Povlitz recently had the pleasure of joining hosts Rick Grossman and Rob Gandley on their weekly Franchise Bible Coach Radio Podcast. During the show, Povlitz discussed how the Coronavirus pandemic has changed the world’s view of the janitorial industry.

“For our business, there was definitely initial pullback,” Povlitz said, speaking of the downturn in business as companies shut their doors due to COVID-19. “We were told, ‘Look, we have to close, so we’re putting your services on pause.’” But coming out of it, Povlitz said his team saw that the paradigm had shifted. “Earlier this year I had read a study by Building Service Contractors Association International, which showed that companies wanted to minimize their budgets on what they spent on cleaning. Coming out of COVID, instead of being an item to minimize, suddenly customers are coming to us as infection prevention experts and saying, ‘How do I make sure my employees are safe?”

Povlitz realized that his franchisees had a unique opportunity to gain credibility and grow their businesses, and he made it a priority to provide tools and training that would further their expertise in their fields.

“We went ahead and put together our best and brightest, and created a procedural manual and program that we can use to certify our franchisees in disinfection procedures—which are totally different from cleaning. We made sure our Franchise Owners knew how this worked, got them the best equipment and procedures, and certified them so that when they go to a customer they can say, ‘Look, we’ve undergone training, we’ve had to take a test; we’re not just walking in here with rags and buckets and mops and saying we’re disinfecting. We’re really doing what we’re saying.’”

With this shift in perspective, enhanced disinfection training and additional disinfection services available to clients, Povlitz said the franchise side of business is booming.

“We’re seeing a lot of people who are seeing the opportunity, who are seeing the potential growth curve in commercial cleaning. They’re saying, ‘Wait a minute, this is something that isn’t going to get outsourced, this isn’t going to get replaced by Amazon, and by the way, the industry is about to boom.’ … It’s an incredible time to get into commercial cleaning.”
