Valentine’s Day has always been special. Though celebrated with adornment and adoration, the origins of Valentine’s Day—and the story of its patron saint—are a bit of a mystery. February is known as the month of romance, and St. Valentine’s that we celebrate today can be traced back to ancient Rome. But what made Valentine so saintly? There are many legends about the martyrdom of St. Valentine.
Some contend that Valentine was a priest who defied Emperor Claudius II and his order to outlaw marriage for young men. Others believe that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the actual namesake of the holiday. Either story ends in beheading, so it doesn’t matter too much.
Some think that Valentine may have been killed helping Christians escape torture in Roman prisons. In one story, an imprisoned Valentine sent the first “valentine” greeting after falling in love with a jailor’s daughter who visited him in prison. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression still used today.
